Midland Community Center

The Midland Community Center is hiring. Hmm, I bet I'd get a free membership if I worked there.

Peckham

The job looked interesting, but I still don't know a lot about Peckham. I'm going to keep an eye on this job.

BCD Travel

I have to admit that it sounds like it would be pretty interesting to work for a travel agency. Especially one with a big picture of a briefcase on their homepage! But, after reading the job description for the position they listed on Michigan Works! I realized that I might not be ready to coordinate the travel plans of hundreds of different business people.

Local Counties

I followed a job listing to the website for Midland County. I'm actually in Isabella County, but used to work in the City of Midland so I wondered how many county jobs there might be in that area. There were only two, of course, but this lead me to realize that the counties could be a strong source for jobs. I've picked at Isabella County's site, and now Midland County, but I might check out the sites for other neighboring counties just to see what they have to offer.

For the most part, Midland County's website looks pretty good.

Groovejob.com

I discovered Groovejob at groovejob.com while I was searching for jobs through hotjobs.com, and I wasn't very pleased with it. While I was setting up an account with Groovejob I was forced to view advertisements for things that I really wasn't interested in. I mean, come on already, I'm looking for a job, so its not like I have money to spend on Netflix or something!

Nevertheless, I went along with their little requirement and checked "yes" for Netflix. At least I already know what this service is about. But, when I clicked on "No thanks" at the bottom of the screen and then "Submit," I was brought back to a new list of advertisements for me to look at! I was stuck in some kind of promotion hell! Finally I just said "the heck with this!" and clicked on the "home" button.

I'll let you know how my job search on HotJobs goes.

Job Hunt Style

What's your job hunting style?

I am pretty eager to start working again, so I am constantly on the computer looking for jobs. My wife insists that I should try to pace myself, but I just can't shake the feeling that I'm not doing anything unless I am actively trying to find a job.

There is actually a time factor because my unemployment won't last forever, plus things just won't feel normal until I have a job again.

Slow week for Jobs

Actually, I haven't gotten any new responses for my job applications for a couple of weeks now. My last interview was in early May. I'm hoping that this just means that employers are still reviewing resumes and that the phone will start ringing or responses will start rolling in via email.

The most interesting job I've applied for was with a cemetery in Midland as a consultant. I figured that if I could help promote the usage of the dreaded iRooms then I could help families set up burial plots. I talked to someone else who had considered applying for the first job, and he said it sounded like a good opportunity for ministry. I could see what he meant: the burial arrangements would probably be a very spiritual and emotional process.

I recently applied for a position with my former company. I hope that I hear something back about it soon.

My favorite website so far is http://www.michworks.org.

My Job Hunt Begins

Job Hunter's Log: Friday, June 8, 2007

Good news arrived today in the form of a letter that wasn't a rejection. It wasn't exactly an invitation for a job interview, but these days I'm willing to take what I can get.

I'm going to promptly fill out the questionnaire and get it back so they can continue their process. Male? Check. White? Check. Desperately need a job? Check.

Okay, I made that last one up.

We are continuing to survive off of unemployment and my wife's salary.
